La semana pasada se produjeron en el Reino Unido algunos de los peores disturbios generalizados de los últimos trece años. Los disturbios se debieron a la desinformación difundida a través de las redes sociales sobre los antecedentes del sospechoso de los apuñalamientos del lunes en Southport.
La policía informó de que Axel Rudakubana, el sospechoso de 17 años, había nacido en Gran Bretaña. Sin embargo, esto no ha impedido una escalada y que esta violencia antiinmigración e islamófoba crezca en todo el Reino Unido.
Destrucción de hoteles donde residen solicitantes de asilo
Los alborotadores de Rotherham han irrumpido en el hotel Holiday Inn Express, que acoge a solicitantes de asilo. Lanzaron piedras contra el hotel mientras los agentes de policía permanecían delante intentando proteger a quienes se encontraban en el interior del edificio.
Lindsey Butterfield, ayudante del jefe de policía de South Yorkshire, calificó el incidente de «repugnante muestra de matonismo». Según Butterfield, durante estos actos violentos, en el hotel había «residentes y personal aterrorizados».

Países extranjeros emiten alertas de seguridad a sus ciudadanos
Nigeria, Malasia e Indonesia han emitido alertas de seguridad para advertir a las personas que viven o viajan al Reino Unido que se mantengan alejadas de los disturbios. Las mezquitas han sido blanco de los disturbios y se han manifestado motivos racistas y antiislámicos. Por ello, estos países de mayoría musulmana han advertido a sus ciudadanos sobre los actuales acontecimientos en el Reino Unido.
El lunes, Australia también dijo a sus ciudadanos que «extremaran la precaución» si querían viajar al Reino Unido.
Respuesta del Gobierno de Reino Unido
Tras la reunión de emergencia del COBRA, el Ministerio del Interior británico ha declarado que «la policía, las autoridades locales y las mezquitas pueden solicitar un despliegue rápido de seguridad». Asimismo, el gobierno ha afirmado que se están creando más plazas en prisión para encarcelar a los responsables de los comportamientos delictivos, racistas y violentos e igualar el número de detenciones.
Yvette Cooper, ministra del Interior, ha declarado: «La violencia criminal y el desorden no tienen cabida en las calles británicas». Ha aludido a castigos que incluyen penas de prisión y prohibiciones de viajar.
El primer ministro, Keir Starmer, ha condenado ampliamente la violencia por estar liderada por la extrema derecha y ha dicho que «no es protesta, es violencia». Ha establecido que «el derecho a la libertad de expresión y los desórdenes violentos que hemos visto son dos cosas muy diferentes».

Escalation of widespread violence in the UK
Since the riots in Southport, violent disorder has spread across other parts of the UK including Rotherham, Middlesbrough, Bolton, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, and Belfast over the weekend
The UK has seen some of its worst widespread rioting in 13 years over the past week. The riots were driven by misinformation spread via social media about the background of the suspect in stabbings in Southport on Monday.
Axel Rudakubana, the 17 year old suspect has been reported by the police as being born in Britain. However, this has not prevented an escalation and this anti-immigration, islamophobic violence to grow across the UK.
Destruction of hotels where asylum seekers reside
Rioters in Rotherham have broken into the Holiday Inn Express hotel which shelters asylum seekers. Rocks were thrown at the hotel as police officers stood in front trying to protect those inside the building.
It has been established as far-right violence and South Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield called it “a disgusting display of thuggery”. The hotel during this violence contained “terrified residents and staff”, Butterfield said.
The disorder initially involved 250 people on Sunday but it grew to include 500 more who all were believed to hold anti-immigration beliefs. So far six people have been arrested however the police asserted that this number will “increase significantly in the coming days”. On Monday, locals began to clean up the debris left behind from the violence.
Another hotel which temporarily houses asylum seekers was attacked in Tamworth, Staffordshire on Sunday. Windows were smashed and petrol bombs were used to start fires by the rioters.
Violence continued and mass arrests
In Liverpool, there was more violence with bricks and flares thrown at police and around 1,000 anti-immigration rioters some of which exclaimed Islamophobic slurs and were met with counter-protesters. There were some hundred anti- racist protesters who demanded unity and shouted “refugees are welcome here”.
Furthermore, Merseyside Police said that a library was set on fire in Walton in the area and rioters even tried to stop firefighters from distinguishing it. Bristol saw rioters, some of which sang “we want our country back” confronted by counter-protesters.
In Belfast there was more destruction carried out by rioters. Rahmi Akyol, owner of a cafe in Belfast said he had “no reason why they attacked us” and that people were throwing bottles and chairs at his business.
In response to the violence, the National Police Chiefs’ Council announced that more than 370 people have been arrested since last week however this figure is predicted to increase as the total has of arrests has not yet been confirmed.
Harmful role of social media
Social media has been cited as one of the ways in which the issue has been inflamed. Disinformation has spread rapidly about this story through these platforms. Equally high-profile figures such as Elon Musk the owner of X posted that “civil war is inevitable” in response to a person blaming migration for the riots.
In response to this, Downing Street asserted there was “no justification” for his remarks. Furthermore Justice Minister Heidi Alexander stated that social media platforms have “ a moral responsibility” to deal with and remove misinformation.
Countries abroad issue safety warnings to citizens
Nigeria, Malaysia and Indonesia have issued safety alerts to warn people living or travelling to the UK to keep away from the riots. Mosques have been targeted in riots and there has been a racist and anti-Islamic motive displayed. Therefore, these Muslim-majority countries have warned their citizens about the current events in the UK.
On Monday, Australia also told its citizens to “exercise a high degree of caution”, if seeking travel to the UK.
Government response
Following the emergency COBRA meeting, the UK Home Office has said “the police, local authorities and mosques can ask for rapid security to be deployed”. Also, the government has said more prison spaces are being created to imprison those responsible for the criminal, racist and violent behaviour and match the number of arrests.
Yvette Cooper, the home secretary said, “Criminal violence and disorder has no place on Britain’s streets”. She has alluded to punishments including imprisonment and travel bans.
The Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly condemned the violence as being led by the far right and he has said it is “ not protest, it is violence”. He has established that “the right to freedom of expression and the violent disorder we have seen are two very different things”.
This outbreak of violence is one of the most recent challenges which has Keir Starmer faces as prime minister. It is important that the perpetrators of this violence and rioters are brought to justice to consolidate him as a strong leader of the country. Also, decisive action will demonstrate solidarity with the Muslim communities within the UK.
